How do I create a Geofence?

There are two steps to creating a SpeedGauge geofence: creating a custom Google Map, and submitting a geofence request to SpeedGauge with the map attached. A free Google account is required to create the map.

  1. Log in to your Google account
  2. Go to the My Maps page and click the Create A New Map button
  3. Give your map a Title and Description. Please include the desired speed limit in your description
  4. Click on the draw line icon to begin making your geofence
  5. Using the line drawing tool, draw a geofence around your desired location. Make sure to draw a complete enclosed zone in which your end point matches up to your start point.
    1. If you have successfully closed the shape, it will prompt you to name the shape, the default name will be “Polygon” and the shape will be shaded
    2. If the default name is “Line” and/or the shape is not shaded, you have created a line - delete it and try again - the geofence must be a shape in Google Maps
  6. When you are done, click on Share, change your sharing settings to Anyone with the link, click on Save and copy the sharing link
  7. Complete the form at https://www.speedgauge.net/anywhere (including the sharing URL for your map)
    • Please note: When setting your Geofence speed limit, keep in mind any thresholds that your vehicle groups may have in place - if you want a strict 25 MPH limit inside your geofence and have a 5 MPH threshold in place, you will need to set the limit inside your Geofence to 20 MPH

The geofence submission form asks for your SpeedGauge ID number ("cstid"). This is a unique ID that SpeedGauge applies to your company. To find this number, simply log into the SpeedGauge Safety Center and look at your Vehicle Groups Dashboard. Your SpeedGauge ID is listed right below your company's name (the Customer field).

If you need any assistance please send an email to support@speedgauge.net. We would be happy to walk you through the steps or answer any questions you may have.
