SpeedGauge uses data collected by your GPS provider and analyzes that data to help you identify trends and patterns in the speeding behavior of your fleet. Our analytics rely on the data provided by our GPS partners, and it is important for users to understand which pieces of data are forwarded by the GPS provider, and how this data is shared.
Your GPS provider collects vehicle observation data (also called “pings” or “breadcrumbs”) from your fleet’s vehicles. Each observation includes the vehicle’s speed, location, and heading, as well as the time of the observation. It may also include information about the driver, and an odometer reading. Observations are generally collected every one to five minutes - the exact frequency depends on your GPS provider and is controlled by them.
Observation data is the responsibility of your GPS provider and SpeedGauge will never modify it for any reason. SpeedGauge does apply several proprietary filtering technologies to identify and ignore bad observations, such as a vehicle traveling north on a one-way southbound road or a vehicle that appears to be driving in the middle of a lake, though bad observations do get through occasionally.
If your GPS service provides driver information, it is also important to remember that drivers must be logged in correctly with the appropriate duty status at all times in order to appear correctly in SpeedGauge driver-based reports.
